Join Together Outdoors

The Together Outdoors Coalition provides a cross-sector collaborative learning space for outdoor recreation manufacturers, retailers, service providers, land managers, grassroots organizations, and other stakeholders to advance inclusion and diversity throughout the recreation economy. People of Color, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and marginalized people of various backgrounds, faiths, and abilities comprise a disproportionately low number of those who enjoy the outdoors and there are steps we can take together to create a more inclusive and welcoming user experience and informed and educated business interface with the consumer.

We know that this work isn’t easy. Through collaboration we can move the industry towards a more inclusive future that invigorates the benefits of diversity, public health, environmental advocacy, and economic development. We look forward to supporting your organization, business. or agency at any stage of your learning process.

Our efforts include:

  • Multi-session education program focused on various DEI topics relevant to the outdoors.

  • An interactive JEDI/DEI resource library for members that we're in the process of developing.

  • Logo/branding campaign dedicated to promoting the outdoors as a welcoming space.

  • A Slack channel to keep members updated with the work of Together Outdoors, DEI related news and resources, and connect with other members of the coalition.

Commitment:

As a part of the coalition, you will appoint a member of your team to attend our monthly coalition meetings, take advantage of trainings, resources, and dialogues in our learning community, help shape the direction of this work, and be a part of the national awareness campaign. Together Outdoors trainings are designed to create more welcoming experiences for outdoor users and to also build a trained and aware workforce to meet growing consumer needs.

The liaison to the Together Outdoors Coalition will be responsible for sharing the trainings with their organization’s leadership and workforce to take part in. Examples of liaison roles so far are chief council, human resources managers, and executive directors. As the coalition develops, there will be opportunities to participate in specialized subcommittees and identify how the coalition can support your sector in new and impactful ways.

Making Your Commitment Public

After completing the Together Outdoors baseline training, participating organizations will then be eligible to display the consumer-facing Together Outdoors logo and materials to signal that they are on a journey towards being a safe and welcoming place for all outdoor enthusiasts. We envision this logo showing up on storefronts, trail signs, campground information boards, and at marinas, etc.
